How effective is PGT-M for recurrent miscarriage?

Some recurrent miscarriages are related to a particular gene change that can be passed through a family. PGT-M targets that known condition in embryos made through IVF. It does not test all chromosome changes, uterine causes, hormone problems, sperm factors or other reasons a pregnancy may end. A suitable result can support embryo selection, while an unclear result needs specialist interpretation. Genetic counselling helps separate a known inherited risk from the broader evaluation of pregnancy loss.

Ask for a review of pregnancy tissue testing, family history and genetic results where available. Both partners may need testing, and a genetics laboratory may need to build a customised assay before treatment. Discuss the number and quality of embryos expected, possible outcomes when testing is inconclusive, and confirmatory testing during pregnancy. The fertility team can also assess non-genetic contributors instead of attributing every miscarriage to one explanation.

During IVF, seek urgent advice for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, faintness, breathing difficulty or pronounced abdominal swelling. In pregnancy, urgent assessment is needed for heavy bleeding, severe one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting or feeling acutely unwell. After a loss, contact your clinician for fever, worsening pain or foul-smelling discharge, and request emotional support if grief is overwhelming.

Ask whether a specific inherited condition has been identified, whether PGT-M can test it, and which causes of miscarriage still need assessment. Clarify how results affect transfer, what confirmatory testing is advised, and what alternatives exist if testing does not produce a suitable embryo.
