The panel measures substances linked to liver-cell irritation and the liver's processing work. Hepatitis C can be present when these results are not raised, while raised results can come from medicines, alcohol, metabolic liver disease, or other infections. The result describes the liver's condition at that point; it does not identify the cause on its own.

To assess hepatitis C, clinicians use specific antibody and viral tests and may assess liver scarring with examination, imaging, or other investigations. They consider the full pattern rather than treating one number as a diagnosis. Results can also help monitor the liver before, during, or after treatment.

Attend testing with an accurate list of prescription medicines, non-prescription products, supplements, and alcohol use. If a hepatitis C antibody test is positive, ask about the follow-up viral test that checks whether current infection is present.
