How effective is IUI for unexplained infertility?

Unexplained infertility means routine assessments have not identified why conception has not occurred. It does not mean that nothing is happening; tests cannot measure every step, including sperm movement through the reproductive tract, egg quality, fertilisation, or early embryo development.

IUI places prepared sperm in the uterus near ovulation and may be paired with medicine to encourage egg release. The approach aims to improve timing and the number of motile sperm near the egg while leaving fertilisation to occur in the body.

Before IUI, the team usually confirms ovulation and checks that at least one fallopian tube is open. Discuss whether a natural or stimulated cycle fits your situation, how monitoring will work, and how many cycles will be tried before reassessment.

Review the plan if cycles are unsuccessful, symptoms change, or new information appears. Age, ovarian reserve, semen findings, previous pregnancy history, and emotional or practical preferences can all influence the next choice.

Seek prompt advice for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fever, faintness, or breathing difficulty after treatment. Abdominal swelling with vomiting or rapidly increasing discomfort after stimulation also warrants urgent contact with the clinic.
