How effective is GP consultation for tonsillitis?

The GP will ask when the sore throat began, whether swallowing is difficult, and whether you have fever, cough, swollen neck glands or repeated episodes. They may examine your tonsils, throat and neck and listen to your breathing. This helps distinguish a likely viral illness from features that may need testing or specific treatment. A consultation can also identify dehydration, a collection beside a tonsil or another cause of throat pain. It cannot make every sore throat settle immediately, and antibiotics are not appropriate for every case.

Before the appointment, note your temperature, fluid intake, medicines and any change in your voice or ability to swallow. Follow the agreed plan, drink regularly if you can, rest, and use recommended pain relief according to the label or your clinician’s advice. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine. Arrange review if symptoms are worsening, are not improving in the expected timeframe, or keep returning; the GP can discuss testing, referral or prevention of further episodes.

Seek urgent medical help if you cannot swallow saliva, are struggling to breathe, develop rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck, or have a muffled voice with difficulty opening your mouth. These features can signal a complication needing prompt assessment. Get medical advice sooner if you are becoming dehydrated, unusually drowsy or unable to keep fluids down.

Ask: Does this look viral or bacterial? What can I use safely for pain and fever? Which symptoms mean I should return urgently? If episodes recur, would a throat test or specialist assessment help?
