How effective is GP consultation for the common cold?

A GP can ask about cough, sore throat, blocked or runny nose, fever, breathing and how the illness has changed. They may examine your throat, ears, chest and general condition to check whether another infection or a complication needs attention.

For an uncomplicated cold, the main benefit is reassurance and advice about fluids, rest and suitable symptom relief. Antibiotics do not treat viruses, so they are not routinely useful for a straightforward cold. A different plan may be needed for people with long-term conditions or a weakened immune system.

Arrange a consultation if symptoms are unusually severe, persist without improvement, keep returning, or you are unsure whether they are a cold. Note when symptoms began, any fever, breathing changes, medicines taken and relevant conditions such as asthma.

Use medicines only as directed and check combination products so you do not take the same ingredient twice. Rest, drink enough to avoid dehydration and stay home when you feel unwell enough that normal activities are unsafe.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue or grey lips, confusion, inability to keep fluids down, or a rapidly worsening condition. Prompt review is sensible for a persistent high fever, severe ear pain or worsening symptoms in someone with significant long-term illness.
