How effective is caesarean section for twin and multiple pregnancy?

Multiple pregnancy does not automatically require a caesarean. The decision depends on the number of babies, each baby's position, the placenta arrangement, growth, your health, and the experience of the maternity team. A caesarean may be recommended when the first baby is not head-down, when babies share a placenta or sac, or when labour could place a baby or you under added strain.

A planned operation can help the team prepare staff, theatre space, newborn support, anaesthesia, and blood-safety arrangements. It does not remove every possible concern: surgery has recovery needs, and an unplanned caesarean may still be needed if labour changes or a baby becomes distressed.

Attend ultrasound and antenatal appointments so the team can follow growth, fluid, placental arrangement, and presentation. Ask when birth is recommended, what could change the plan, and how monitoring will work during labour or surgery. Discuss anaesthesia, recovery, feeding support, and the possibility that the babies may need assessment after birth. Contact your maternity unit urgently for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, a sudden change in movements, severe headache, vision changes, or breathlessness. With more than one baby, do not wait for a scheduled operation if labour or warning symptoms begin.
