How effective is caesarean section for HELLP syndrome?

HELLP syndrome involves haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets. It can worsen quickly and may affect the liver, blood clotting and the placenta. The maternity team assesses your symptoms, blood tests, blood pressure, gestation and the baby's condition before deciding how urgently birth should happen.

A caesarean may be appropriate when immediate delivery is needed, labour is not progressing, or vaginal birth would place the mother or baby at greater risk. In other situations, a carefully monitored induction may be considered. The operation treats the need to deliver; blood pressure, clotting concerns and other complications still require active care.

HELLP syndrome requires hospital care, not home observation. The team may repeat blood tests, give medicines, arrange blood products if needed and involve anaesthesia and neonatal specialists. After birth, ask how long monitoring will continue and which symptoms or test results require review.

Seek emergency maternity care for severe or persistent pain beneath the ribs, a severe headache, vision changes, breathlessness, confusion, heavy bleeding, a seizure or markedly reduced fetal movement. These symptoms can occur before or after birth and need immediate assessment.

Ask which blood results are concerning, whether you are stable enough for anaesthesia, why caesarean or induction is recommended, how the baby will be monitored, and what follow-up is needed for blood pressure, liver function and platelets after birth.
