How does wound care and dressing work?

A clinician first checks the wound’s depth, edges, bleeding, circulation and surrounding skin. It may be gently cleaned to remove dirt or discharge. A suitable sterile dressing then absorbs fluid or keeps the surface from drying and sticking, depending on the wound. The dressing also creates a barrier against rubbing and outside contamination.

Cuts and Lacerations, Minor Burns, animal bites and diabetic foot ulcers need different assessments. Some injuries need specialist treatment, closure, antibiotics, tetanus protection or repeated review rather than a simple dressing.

Wash your hands before and after touching the dressing. Keep it clean and follow the clinician’s instructions about when to change it. Do not pull off a stuck dressing; moisten it as advised. Avoid soaking the wound unless you have been told this is suitable, and do not apply household creams, powders or antiseptics without guidance.

Watch the wound each time the dressing is changed. Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain, drainage or an unpleasant smell should be reported. A Sterile Wound Dressing may be selected for a particular amount of fluid or wound location. A clinician can explain whether Minor Burn Treatment or another treatment is needed.

Get urgent help if bleeding does not stop with firm pressure, the wound is deep or gaping, numbness or loss of movement develops, or an object remains embedded. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, red streaks, or a bite wound. Diabetes can make a foot wound more urgent.
