How does vitamin D analogue treatment work?

Psoriasis can make skin cells build up too quickly, creating thick, scaly, irritated patches. A vitamin D analogue acts on the skin cells involved in this process. It is designed to bring cell production closer to a normal pace and settle local inflammation, rather than supplying vitamin D for the whole body.

These medicines are usually applied directly to affected areas. Improvement may be gradual, and the result depends on the location, extent, thickness, and activity of the psoriasis. Calcipotriol is one example of a vitamin D analogue.

Apply the prescribed amount to psoriasis plaques and follow the schedule given by your clinician. Wash your hands after application unless your hands are the treated area, and keep the medicine away from the eyes, mouth, and other sensitive surfaces. Do not apply it to broken or infected skin unless a clinician specifically directs you.

Tell your clinician about other creams, light treatment, pregnancy, or conditions affecting calcium balance. Skin irritation can occur, especially early in treatment; report persistent burning, marked redness, or worsening discomfort so the plan can be adjusted.

Seek prompt medical advice if treated skin becomes very painful, rapidly swollen, blistered, or develops pus, or if a widespread rash or facial swelling appears. Contact your clinician if plaques spread quickly, involve the eyes or genitals, or if joint pain and stiffness accompany the skin changes.
