How does tetanus vaccination work?

The vaccine contains a harmless, inactivated form of the tetanus toxin. It cannot cause tetanus, but it gives the immune system a safe target. The body makes defensive proteins and memory cells, so a later encounter with the toxin can trigger a faster response. Protection is maintained through the recommended vaccination schedule and booster doses.

Vaccination does not clean a wound or replace careful washing and medical assessment. A deep, dirty or puncture wound, an animal bite or an uncertain vaccination history may require a clinician to consider wound care and additional protection. Antibiotics do not substitute for vaccination against the toxin.

Rinse a cut with clean running water, remove visible dirt without forcing objects deeper and cover it with a clean dressing. Contact a healthcare professional promptly for a deep, contaminated or bite wound, especially if you cannot recall your vaccination history. After vaccination, mild soreness or a brief fever can occur; follow the aftercare advice you receive.

Seek urgent care for a wound with spreading redness, swelling, pus, severe pain, loss of movement or fever. Emergency help is needed for jaw stiffness, painful muscle spasms, difficulty swallowing or breathing. These features can signal serious illness and should not be managed by waiting for a vaccine to take effect.

Ask whether your vaccination record is up to date, whether the wound needs cleaning or closure, and whether a booster or additional medicine is appropriate. Tell the clinician when the injury happened, what caused it and whether dirt, saliva or a foreign object entered the wound.
