How does sleep study work?

Sensors may detect airflow through the nose and mouth, chest movement, blood oxygen, heart rate, body position and movement. A clinic-based study can also record brain activity and muscle activity to help identify sleep stages. A home sleep apnoea test device usually collects fewer signals and is used when the clinical question is suspected obstructive sleep apnoea.

The equipment should not hurt, although adhesive sensors and a finger or nasal probe may feel unfamiliar. The recording is reviewed with your symptoms and medical history; one night of data is not interpreted in isolation.

Follow the clinic’s instructions about washing your hair or skin, medicines, caffeine and alcohol. Keep your usual sleep routine unless told otherwise, and tell the team if you use breathing equipment or medicines that affect sleep. At home, test the sensor placement before bedtime if instructed and record when you go to sleep and wake. Return the device promptly so the recording can be analysed.

Arrange medical review for loud habitual snoring with witnessed breathing pauses, gasping at night, morning headaches, marked daytime sleepiness or sleepiness while driving. Seek urgent help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or sudden confusion rather than waiting for a sleep-study appointment. Tell the clinician if poor sleep is affecting work, school or safety.
