How does shoulder arthroscopy work?

Shoulder arthroscopy uses a small camera and specialised instruments through small openings to inspect and treat shoulder problems. The surgeon fills the joint with sterile fluid for visibility, views the images on a monitor, and uses separate instruments to repair, remove or smooth damaged tissue when appropriate.

An arthroscope can show cartilage, tendons, ligaments and the joint lining from inside the shoulder. The procedure may address a torn tendon, unstable joint tissue, inflamed tissue or loose material. It can also help treat conditions such as calcific tendinitis or selected stages of frozen shoulder. The exact repair depends on what is found and on the preoperative examination and imaging. Small skin openings do not mean the internal repair is minor; tendon or ligament healing still needs protection.

Follow instructions about fasting, medicines and arranging transport. After surgery, a sling may protect a repair, while hand, wrist and elbow movement is often encouraged as directed. Keep dressings dry, use prescribed pain relief, and begin physiotherapy at the agreed stage. Do not lift or test the shoulder until the surgeon or therapist confirms that the repair can tolerate that load. Recovery varies with the procedure performed.

Call the surgical team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain, or new tingling and weakness. Seek urgent care for a cold or unusually pale hand, severe swelling, chest pain, breathing difficulty or sudden loss of arm movement. A fall while the shoulder is protected should be reported if it causes new pain or deformity.

Ask what the arthroscope may find, whether a repair is likely, how long a sling is needed, and when physiotherapy starts. Clarify bathing, driving, work, sleep positions and the symptoms that should prompt an urgent call.
