How Does Scar Revision Surgery Work?

The technique depends on whether the scar is wide, depressed, raised, tight, painful or limiting movement. A surgeon may excise the old scar and bring the edges together, rearrange the direction of the closure, release tethered tissue or use a graft or flap when more coverage is needed. Burn scars and hypertrophic scars may require a broader plan than a simple line scar. Revision replaces one scar with another planned wound; the aim is improvement in position, texture or movement, not removal of the body's healing response.

At consultation, describe itching, pain, tightness, previous wound problems and any tendency to form raised scars. Follow instructions about medicines, smoking, cleansing and activity before the procedure. Afterward, protect the closure from tension, keep dressings in place as instructed and attend wound checks. Once the incision has healed, the surgeon may recommend silicone gel sheets, massage or other scar care. Sun protection helps reduce colour contrast while the scar matures.

Contact the surgical team for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, wound separation or pain that is getting worse. Fever or feeling markedly unwell also needs medical advice. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, fainting, rapidly spreading swelling or breathing difficulty.
