How does nerve root block work?

Short answer

A nerve root block places local anaesthetic and often corticosteroid beside an irritated spinal nerve to reduce pain and clarify its source.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Target
A selected spinal nerve root.
Two possible roles
Short-term numbing and inflammation reduction, with diagnostic information.

What the injection does

The clinician uses imaging to guide a fine needle to the selected nerve root, usually near the point where it leaves the spine. Local Anaesthetic can numb signals for a short period, while Corticosteroid may calm inflammation around the nerve over the following days. Relief can support movement and rehabilitation, and the response may help the clinician judge whether that nerve contributes to symptoms. The injection does not remove a disc problem or widen the spinal canal, and benefit varies with the cause of irritation.

Before and after the procedure

Tell the team about medicines, allergies, diabetes, infection, pregnancy, and previous reactions to injections. Arrange transport if advised and follow instructions about eating, medication, and activity. Mild soreness or temporary heaviness can occur; avoid strenuous activity until you have been told it is appropriate. Record changes in pain, sensation, and strength, including how long any relief lasts. Sciatica may be one reason a targeted block is considered.

When to seek care

Get prompt medical advice for fever, spreading redness, drainage, severe headache, persistent numbness, or worsening weakness after the injection. Seek urgent care for new bladder or bowel difficulty, numbness around the genitals, breathing trouble, or a rapidly worsening reaction. These symptoms need assessment rather than waiting for the injection to take effect.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which nerve is being targeted, whether the injection is mainly diagnostic or therapeutic, what medicine will be used, when benefit should be judged, and which symptoms require urgent contact.

Questions people ask

Is a nerve root block the same as surgery?

No. It is an image-guided injection and does not remove tissue or repair the spine.

Why use local anaesthetic and corticosteroid?

The anaesthetic can provide temporary numbing, while the corticosteroid is intended to reduce local inflammation.
