How does knee arthroscopy work?

Short answer

Knee arthroscopy uses a small camera through a skin opening to inspect the joint, while separate instruments treat selected problems through other openings.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the surgeon does

After anaesthesia, the surgeon makes small openings around the knee and fills the joint with sterile fluid to improve the view. An arthroscope sends a magnified image to a monitor. Through additional openings, fine instruments can trim or repair selected tissue, remove loose material, or smooth an area when that treatment matches the diagnosis. A meniscus tear and plica syndrome may be managed differently, so the planned procedure depends on the location and type of problem.

Arthroscopy is both a way to see inside the joint and a route for treatment. Examination and imaging, which may include musculoskeletal MRI, help determine whether it is appropriate.

Before and after the procedure

Ask which medicines to pause, whether you need someone to take you home, and what equipment may help during the first days. Recovery can include swelling control, early prescribed movement, and exercises to restore knee motion and strength. Follow weight-bearing instructions carefully, because the limits can differ after a simple inspection, tissue trimming, or repair.

When to seek care

Call your surgical team for increasing redness, wound drainage, fever, worsening pain, or calf swelling. Seek urgent help for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, a cold or numb foot, or inability to move the ankle or toes.

Questions for your doctor

What finding are you treating, and might the procedure change if the joint looks different than expected? When may I bear weight, drive, work, and exercise? What are the wound, infection, clot, or stiffness warning signs for this operation?

Questions people ask

Can knee arthroscopy treat every knee problem?

No. It is suited to selected conditions and findings; some problems need another treatment or no operation.

Why might an MRI be done first?

MRI can show soft tissues and help match the proposed operation to the suspected knee problem.
