How Does Imiquimod Treatment Work?

Imiquimod is applied to a defined area rather than injected or taken as a tablet. It signals nearby immune cells to release messenger chemicals and mount an inflammatory response. That response can act against some actinic keratoses, selected superficial basal cell carcinomas, genital warts and other warts, depending on the diagnosis and site. The cream does not suit every lesion, and a clinician may need to examine or sample a growth before prescribing it.

Redness, scaling, crusting, soreness, itching or weeping at the application site can occur as the immune response develops. These changes may be expected, but severe inflammation can require a pause or a revised schedule. Do not apply it to unassessed lesions or share the medicine.

Use the prescribed amount and schedule on clean, dry skin, then wash your hands. Keep the cream away from eyes, lips, inside the nose and broken skin unless specifically directed. Avoid covering the area with a dressing unless told to do so, and protect treated skin from irritation. Keep follow-up appointments so the clinician can check whether the lesion is responding and whether another approach, such as cryotherapy, is more suitable.

Contact the prescriber if inflammation becomes difficult to tolerate, spreads beyond the treated area, forms extensive sores, or interferes with eating, urination or sleep. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, severe eye symptoms or signs of a serious infection. A lesion that grows, bleeds repeatedly or fails to heal also needs reassessment rather than extra cream.

Ask what diagnosis is being treated, exactly where to apply the cream, how long to leave it on, and what to do after a missed application. Ask which skin reaction is expected, when to pause, how the site should be protected, and how treatment success will be checked.
