How does finasteride treatment work?

Finasteride blocks part of the enzyme pathway that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. In genetically susceptible follicles, DHT can shorten the growth phase and contribute to gradual thinning. Lowering DHT may help slow this process and support retention or regrowth in some people with Male Pattern Hair Loss.

The medicine works only while its effect is maintained, so stopping can allow the underlying hair-loss process to resume. It does not explain every cause of Hair Loss, including inflammatory or scarring disorders such as Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia. A diagnosis and medication review are needed before starting.

Discuss your medical history, mood, sexual health, fertility plans, liver problems, and all medicines with the prescriber. Take it only as directed and do not share tablets. Keep follow-up appointments so hair density, scalp findings, and any unwanted effects can be reviewed. A clinician may compare it with Topical Minoxidil or another plan.

Contact the prescriber about persistent sexual changes, breast tenderness or enlargement, mood changes, or an allergic reaction. Seek urgent help for facial or throat swelling or breathing difficulty. Report sudden, patchy, painful, or inflamed hair loss because it may need a different evaluation.
