How Does Dupilumab Treatment Work?

Dupilumab is a biologic medicine given by injection. It binds to a shared receptor used by interleukin signals involved in type 2 immune activity. This lowers a particular inflammatory pathway rather than broadly suppressing every immune response. It may improve redness, rash, skin barrier disruption and itch in atopic dermatitis, and is also used for some people with prurigo nodularis. Improvement is individual and may build over time; the medicine manages inflammation rather than removing a tendency to flare.

Possible effects include injection-site reactions, eye irritation or inflammation, cold-sore recurrence and other symptoms. Your prescriber considers your medical history, eye health, infection symptoms and other medicines before treatment.

Use dupilumab on the schedule prescribed and learn the storage, preparation and injection technique from your care team. Continue skin care and any prescribed topical treatment unless your clinician changes the plan. Tell the prescriber about new eye pain, persistent redness, facial symptoms, cold sores, pregnancy or plans for vaccines. Do not change the dose or stop treatment because the rash improves without discussing the next step.

Seek prompt medical advice for significant eye pain, light sensitivity, vision changes, spreading facial swelling, breathing difficulty or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Contact your clinician about a persistent or severe injection reaction, fever, or a skin flare that is rapidly worsening.
