How does covid-19 test work?

A swab collects material from the respiratory tract. A laboratory molecular test looks for viral genetic material and may require processing time. A rapid antigen test kit looks for viral proteins and can produce a result sooner, but the result depends on the sample, timing and test performance.

A positive result supports current infection, while a negative result does not always exclude infection, particularly when testing is early or the sample is inadequate. Symptoms and recent exposure still matter when interpreting a result.

Follow the kit or clinic instructions carefully, including how to collect the swab and read the test window. Check the expiry information and avoid touching the swab tip. If you have symptoms, limit close contact while arranging advice and follow current local guidance.

Tell the clinician when symptoms began, whether you had a recent exposure and whether you have conditions or medicines that may increase concern. A clinician may recommend repeat or laboratory testing when the result does not fit the clinical picture.

Seek urgent medical help for severe difficulty breathing, chest pain or pressure, new confusion, inability to wake, or pale, grey or blue lips or skin. Do not wait for a test result if you feel seriously unwell.
