How does antenatal care package work?

The package commonly starts with an assessment of your health, pregnancy history, medicines and expected due date. Follow-up visits may include blood pressure checks, urine testing, measurement of the uterus, discussion of symptoms and review of the baby’s growth and movements. Blood tests and ultrasound appointments are arranged when appropriate.

Care is adjusted if you have an existing condition or develop a pregnancy concern. For example, your clinician may monitor thyroid treatment, swelling, symptoms of pre-eclampsia, or signs of vitamin D deficiency. The package is a care pathway rather than a single appointment.

At the first visit, share your medical history, previous pregnancies, allergies, medicines and any home blood pressure readings. Keep a record of appointment dates and bring questions to each review. Ask which tests are included, which require a separate booking, and how to contact the maternity team between visits.

Do not wait for the next routine appointment if you have heavy bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, severe headache with vision changes, sudden swelling of the face or hands, chest pain, difficulty breathing, fluid leaking, fever or noticeably reduced fetal movements after a pattern has been established.

Call your maternity service for advice about the right level of care. Routine package visits support monitoring, but urgent symptoms need assessment on the day.

Ask how often visits are planned, which clinician will coordinate your care, what screening is offered, how results are communicated, and whether the package changes for twins or a higher-risk pregnancy. You can also ask how symptoms such as wrist tingling or leg veins should be managed.
