Short answer

You may have a sprained wrist when pain, swelling and tenderness follow a twist or impact, but an examination may be needed to exclude a fracture.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical clues
Pain, tenderness, swelling or bruising after a twist or impact.
Key limitation
Symptoms cannot reliably distinguish a sprain from a fracture.

Signs that can occur

A wrist sprain can make gripping, turning a handle or leaning on the hand uncomfortable. Bruising, stiffness and pain along one side of the wrist may appear as the soft tissues become irritated. Symptoms alone cannot show how badly a ligament is injured, and a fracture can produce a similar pattern. More guidance is available on [Wrist Pain](/symptoms/wrist-pain/).

A healthcare professional considers how the injury happened, checks tenderness and movement, and may arrange imaging. Avoid diagnosing yourself from the amount of swelling: a small-looking injury can still need assessment.

What you can do now

Stop the activity that caused the pain, keep the wrist supported in a neutral position and use a cloth-wrapped cold pack for short intervals. Elevate the hand and remove rings. Do not repeatedly bend the wrist to test it, and do not use force to correct its position.

A temporary [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) plan may limit painful movement. Once serious injury has been excluded, [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) can help you regain comfortable motion and strength.

Red flags to act on

Get urgent help if the wrist is deformed, the hand becomes cold or changes colour, fingers are numb, or you cannot move them. Have the injury assessed promptly when pain is severe, swelling keeps increasing, or normal use remains difficult. These features can indicate a fracture, dislocation or nerve or circulation problem.

What to ask

Ask whether the injury needs an X-ray, how long to wear support, which tasks are safe, and when to begin gentle exercises. Ask how improvement should feel and what change would require another examination.

Questions people ask

Does swelling prove that my wrist is sprained?

No. Swelling can happen with a sprain, fracture or other injury, so the full pattern and examination matter.

Can a sprain cause pain when I grip?

Yes. Irritated wrist ligaments can hurt when gripping, twisting or bearing weight through the hand.
