How do I know I sprained my wrist?

Short answer
A wrist sprain may cause pain, tenderness, swelling and reduced movement after a fall, twist or sudden load.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common clues
- Tenderness, swelling and painful movement
- Important limitation
- Symptoms alone cannot exclude a fracture
How to interpret the symptoms
Pain may increase when you grip, push through the hand or move the wrist toward the injured ligament. Bruising and stiffness are also possible. Symptoms can begin immediately or become clearer as swelling develops. These signs suggest soft-tissue injury but do not prove that a sprain is present: a fracture, tendon injury or cartilage problem can feel similar. A clinician may check the exact tender areas, finger circulation, sensation and movement, and may recommend imaging.
Safe steps while you arrange advice
Protect the wrist from painful activity and avoid repeatedly checking its strength. Remove rings, keep the hand raised when comfortable, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods. A suitable splint can limit aggravating movement; do not make it so tight that fingers tingle or change colour. Once a serious injury has been excluded, physiotherapy may help restore mobility and strength in stages.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care if the wrist looks deformed, pain is extreme, the hand is numb or cold, fingers become pale or blue, or you cannot move them normally. Arrange prompt assessment for pain directly over a bone, marked swelling, persistent inability to grip, or symptoms that do not start improving. An X-ray or other evaluation may be needed because a fracture can resemble a sprain.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the examination supports a sprain, whether imaging is needed, how to use a splint, and when to begin gentle exercises or physiotherapy.
