Why motion sickness causes nausea
Your inner ear senses movement while your eyes may see a stable cabin, seat, or screen. The brain receives mismatched information and may respond with nausea, cold sweating, dizziness, headache, extra saliva, or vomiting. Symptoms can start during travel and often ease after the movement stops. Reading, looking down, and strong smells can make the mismatch more noticeable.
How to reduce symptoms
Face the direction of travel and look at a distant, stable point such as the horizon. Choose a position with less movement, keep your head supported, and take slow breaths. Fresh air and small sips of water may help. Avoid reading, screens, heavy meals, and alcohol before or during travel. If you often become unwell, ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitable preventive medicine before the journey.
When to seek medical advice
Arrange assessment if nausea continues long after travel, occurs without movement, causes repeated vomiting, or leads to signs of dehydration such as very little urine, marked weakness, or faintness. Get urgent help for severe headache, chest pain, confusion, new weakness, or difficulty walking.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which travel position and preventive treatment fit your situation, whether a medicine could cause drowsiness, and how to use it safely if you need to drive after the journey.

Questions people ask
Can looking at a screen worsen motion sickness?
Yes. Focusing on a nearby screen can increase the conflict between what your eyes see and what your inner ear senses.
Should I drink after vomiting?
Try small sips when you can swallow safely; seek advice if fluids will not stay down.
