How common is headache in common cold?

A common cold can inflame the upper airways and cause blocked or runny nasal passages. Pressure from congestion, irritation in the throat, poor sleep, and the body’s general response to infection can all contribute to head pain. Some people describe a dull ache, while others notice pressure across the forehead or face.

The presence of a headache does not establish the cause. Headache can also occur with migraine, dehydration, fever, eye strain, or other infections. Colds commonly improve with time, but symptoms that are unusually severe, prolonged, or different from your usual pattern should be assessed.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and try to maintain comfortable sleep. Saline nasal measures may ease congestion for some people. If you use a pain reliever, follow the package directions and check with a pharmacist or clinician if you have a long-term condition, take other medicines, or are treating a child. Avoid taking several products with the same ingredient.

Seek urgent help for a sudden severe headache, confusion, fainting, new weakness, trouble speaking, a stiff neck with fever, breathing difficulty, or repeated vomiting. Contact a clinician if the headache keeps worsening, fever is persistent, symptoms return after improving, or sinus or ear pain becomes marked. Get advice sooner if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or caring for a very young child.
