How common is bleeding between periods in cervical polyps?

A cervical polyp is a small growth from the cervix. It can cause spotting between periods, bleeding after sex, or bleeding during an examination because its surface may be delicate. Some cervical polyps cause no symptoms at all. Bleeding can also come from infection, hormonal changes, pregnancy-related causes, or changes elsewhere in the reproductive tract, so the symptom does not identify one cause by itself.

Make an appointment if spotting is unexplained, recurrent, or happening after sex. Tell the clinician whether the blood is pink, red, or brown, how long it lasts, and whether you have discharge, pain, or bleeding after menopause. A speculum examination may show a polyp. The clinician might recommend removing it or sending tissue for laboratory examination, depending on its appearance and your circumstances.

Get urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or accompanied by dizziness, fainting, severe pelvic pain, or a possible pregnancy. Arrange prompt review for fever, foul-smelling discharge, increasing pain, repeated bleeding after sex, or any bleeding after menopause. A known polyp still deserves reassessment if the bleeding pattern changes.
