How can I stop spotting?

Spotting is light bleeding between expected periods. Hormonal contraception, missed doses, ovulation, pregnancy, or irritation after sex can cause it. Infections such as Chlamydia may present with spotting alongside pelvic pain, pain during sex, or unusual discharge. Cervical Dysplasia and Cervical Cancer can present with bleeding after sex or between periods, while Womb Cancer may present with unexpected bleeding, particularly after menopause.

Benign growths such as Endometrial Polyps or Uterine Fibroids can also cause irregular bleeding. Spotting alone cannot identify which condition is present, so its timing and associated symptoms guide the assessment.

Write down the date, amount, colour, relation to sex or contraception, and any pain or discharge. Take prescribed contraception as directed and do not change it without advice. Avoid douching and pause anything that causes friction or irritation until the bleeding settles.

Arrange a clinical review if spotting returns, follows sex, occurs after menopause, or is accompanied by symptoms of infection. The assessment may include a pregnancy test, infection testing, a cervical check, or imaging depending on your age, history, and pattern.

Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding when pregnancy is possible. Prompt assessment is also needed for any bleeding after menopause or a persistent change in your usual pattern.

Ask whether the bleeding could relate to contraception, infection, the cervix, or the womb, which tests are suitable, and what symptoms require urgent help.
