Hot Rash: What to Know

Small prickly bumps after sweating fit heat rash, while a rash in a moist skin fold may fit intertrigo. Itch and dryness can occur with atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis. Ringworm often forms a scaly expanding edge, and scabies can cause intense itch that is worse at night. Psoriasis may create well-defined, scaly plaques. A new medicine can trigger drug rash.

The appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. Note when it began, where it started, whether it is spreading, and any new product, medicine, illness, travel, or close contact.

Move to a cooler setting, rinse away possible irritants, pat the skin dry, and wear loose breathable clothing. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, and thick occlusive creams until the cause is clearer. Keep affected folds dry and do not share towels, clothing, or bedding if infection is possible.

A pharmacist or clinician can help choose treatment based on the pattern. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, but contact the prescriber promptly if the rash started after a new drug.

Seek emergency help for breathing trouble, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, mouth or eye sores, or a rapidly spreading rash. Arrange prompt assessment for fever, significant pain, pus, or a rash that is worsening rather than settling.
