Hives Under the Arms: Causes, Care, and Warning Signs

The underarm fold holds warmth and moisture, and movement can make skin rub against skin or clothing. Deodorant, antiperspirant, shaving products, detergent residue, and adhesive materials can also irritate the area or provoke an allergic contact reaction. Hives may occur there as part of a wider outbreak, even when the underarms are the most noticeable site.

Hives are usually raised and changeable. A rash that stays in the fold, becomes scaly, cracks, oozes, or has a sharp border may be another condition and should be examined rather than treated as hives automatically.

Rinse away a suspected new product, pat the area dry, and wear loose clothing that reduces rubbing. Use a cool compress and avoid shaving, fragranced products, and vigorous scrubbing while the skin is active. Do not apply strong steroid creams to the fold without advice because thin, sensitive skin can react to them.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether an oral antihistamine treatment fits your age, health history, and other medicines. Photograph the area before it fades and note deodorants, laundry products, exercise, heat, and timing.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, wheezing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Seek prompt review for rapidly increasing underarm or facial swelling, severe pain, fever, pus, blistering, or a rash that remains fixed. Swelling elsewhere, especially around the lips or eyelids, can be angioedema.
