What should you know about hives spreading?

Hives, also called urticaria, are raised patches or welts that may change location while earlier areas fade. New welts can follow exposure to a medicine, food, infection, heat, pressure, exercise, or another trigger, although a clear trigger is not always found. The rash may sit alongside itchy skin or puffiness around the eyelids, lips, hands, or feet. Hives are different from a fixed rash that stays in one place and gradually changes.

Take a photo when the welts are visible and note foods, medicines, illness, heat, pressure, and activity around the episode. Keep the skin cool, wear loose clothing, and avoid scratching or known triggers. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine is suitable for you; take it only as directed and mention other medicines or health conditions. If episodes keep returning, arrange a medical assessment to review the pattern rather than repeatedly changing treatments yourself.

Get emergency help immediately if hives occur with swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or difficulty swallowing. These signs can accompany a serious allergic reaction. Seek prompt clinical advice for painful lesions, blistering, fever, bruising, or marks that remain in the same spot, because those features need a different assessment. Recurrent or extensive hives also deserve review, especially when a new medicine may be involved.
