What should you know about hives on tattoo?

A hive is usually a raised, itchy area that changes shape or location and fades, even when it appears over tattoo pigment. Fragrance, adhesive wrap, aftercare products, sweat, friction, or a delayed reaction to a pigment may irritate the area, but not every tattoo bump is urticaria.

A rash that remains within specific ink colours, becomes scaly, forms blisters, leaks fluid, feels increasingly painful, or spreads with warmth may need a clinician’s examination. Do not assume a persistent tattoo change is simply hives.

Stop any new aftercare product and rinse gently with lukewarm water if residue is present. Keep the tattoo cool, avoid tight clothing and sun or heat exposure, and do not scratch, scrub, re-ink, or apply unadvised creams. Take clear photographs as the appearance changes.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine is suitable. Do not use oral corticosteroid treatment or restart a suspected product without professional guidance, particularly while the tattoo is healing.

Seek emergency help for wheezing, breathing difficulty, faintness, throat tightness, or swelling of the tongue, lips, or mouth. Angioedema can accompany hives and needs prompt attention when it affects the airway.

Arrange medical review for increasing pain, pus, fever, spreading redness, persistent bumps, or a reaction that returns whenever the tattoo is exposed to a product. Bring the product packaging and photographs if available.
