What should you know about hives on lips?

Hives, also called urticaria, happen when skin cells release inflammatory chemicals. A lip outbreak may follow food, medicine, an insect sting, infection, heat, pressure, or contact with a product, although the trigger is not always found. Individual welts often change shape or position, while deeper swelling of the lips is called angioedema. A visible lip rash can therefore involve both surface hives and deeper swelling. Note what you ate, took, touched, or applied before the episode and photograph the area if it changes quickly.

Stop using any newly introduced lip product and avoid a suspected trigger until a clinician reviews it. Keep the area cool, do not scratch, and use gentle unscented products. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine is suitable, including for children, pregnancy, or other medicines. Do not put steroid creams inside the mouth. If episodes keep returning, a medical assessment can help distinguish hives from contact irritation, infection, or another cause.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue, throat, or inside the mouth; trouble breathing, swallowing, or speaking; wheezing; faintness; confusion; or rapidly worsening symptoms. These can signal a severe allergic reaction. Seek prompt medical advice when lip swelling is new, extensive, painful, associated with fever, or not settling, especially if the cause is unclear. Do not wait for a rash to spread before acting on breathing or throat symptoms.
