What should you know about hives on eyelids?

Eyelid hives are raised, itchy areas produced by a temporary skin reaction. They may move, fade and return, sometimes within the same episode. Cosmetics, cleansers, eye drops, hair products, medicines, foods, heat or rubbing can be relevant exposures. The eyelid skin is thin, so swelling may look dramatic even when the welts are small.

Deeper swelling called angioedema can affect the eyelids without obvious welts and may extend to the lips. A painful, one-sided swelling with fever, discharge, marked redness or eye-movement pain is different from typical hives and needs medical assessment. Do not assume every puffy eyelid is an allergy.

Stop newly introduced eye or facial products and avoid rubbing the eyes. Remove contact lenses and eye makeup while symptoms are active, unless a clinician has told you otherwise. A cool clean compress may soothe discomfort. Keep products and medicine packaging available so a clinician can check possible triggers.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether an oral antihistamine fits your symptoms, age and other medicines. Avoid applying unprescribed creams close to the eye, and do not use someone else’s eye drops. If swelling is affecting vision, seek advice rather than waiting for home care to work.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, trouble swallowing, voice change, dizziness, collapse, or swelling of the tongue or lips. Rapid progression after a food, medicine or sting is especially concerning.

Obtain prompt medical care for eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, fever, pus, severe redness, or swelling that prevents the eye opening. Arrange review for repeated episodes, symptoms lasting beyond a short-lived flare, or uncertainty about whether the rash is hives.
