Hives for 3 Days: What to Know

A hive is usually a raised, itchy welt that can fade while another appears elsewhere. Three days of episodes does not identify one cause by itself. Think back to new medicines, recent illness, foods, insect stings, heat, exercise, pressure, or products used on the skin. Take photographs and note whether each individual mark disappears within a day or stays fixed. A mark that remains in the same place, bruises, hurts, blisters, or comes with fever may need a different assessment than ordinary hives. Swelling beneath the skin may be angioedema.

Cool compresses, loose clothing, and avoiding hot showers can reduce irritation. Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and avoid scratching or vigorous rubbing. Keep a simple symptom diary with times, exposures, medicines, and associated swelling. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about an oral antihistamine that is appropriate for your age, pregnancy status, and other medicines. Do not start oral corticosteroids without medical guidance, and do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the prescriber advises it.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or mouth. Seek prompt assessment if hives began after a new medicine or sting, are rapidly worsening, or include substantial facial swelling. If symptoms continue, recur often, or interfere with sleep despite sensible care, book a clinical review. Bring photographs and the exposure diary so the clinician can focus on the pattern rather than a single moment.
