Hives at night: what to know

Short answer
Hives at night are raised, itchy welts that may be triggered by heat, pressure, bedding, products, or spontaneous urticaria.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What nighttime hives can mean
Hives are a skin reaction in which released inflammatory chemicals make small areas of skin swell. A warm room, sweating, tight sleepwear, mattress materials, detergent, or pressure from lying in one position can make symptoms more noticeable at bedtime. Scratching can add irritation. Individual welts often fade and reappear elsewhere; a mark that stays in one place, becomes scaly, bruised, painful, or drains deserves a different assessment. Hives are not the same as every itchy rash.
What to do tonight
Cool the room, wear loose breathable clothing, and use a cool compress rather than rubbing the skin. Review new detergents, fabric softeners, creams, medicines, foods, and recent illness. Take clear photographs and record when the welts begin, how long each one lasts, and whether swelling affects the lips or eyelids. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an oral antihistamine treatment is suitable and how to use it safely; do not combine products without checking.
When to seek care
Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, a tight throat, difficulty swallowing, or rapidly increasing swelling of the tongue, lips, or face. These symptoms can accompany angioedema or a serious allergic reaction. Arrange medical review if episodes keep returning, disrupt sleep, follow a new medicine, or do not settle with sensible trigger avoidance. Seek prompt assessment for fever, significant pain, blistering, or purple marks.
Questions for your doctor
Could pressure, heat, contact with bedding, or a medicine be contributing? Should I keep a trigger diary? Which treatment is appropriate if symptoms recur, and which warning signs should change my plan?
