Hives around the neck

Hives from urticaria can appear suddenly along the neck, change shape, and fade as new welts arise elsewhere. Collars, necklaces, hair products, fragrance, sweat, heat, pressure, foods, medicines, or an infection may be associated with an episode. Swelling beneath the skin can extend around the neck or face and is known as angioedema. A rash that follows a sharp contact outline, flakes, or persists in one place may have another cause.

Remove tight collars and jewellery, rinse away a suspected product, and keep the area cool and dry. Choose loose soft clothing and avoid scratching or vigorous rubbing. Note recent exposures and whether the welts move or disappear. A pharmacist can help you choose an oral antihistamine if it is appropriate; follow the label and mention other medicines or health conditions. Repeated neck hives warrant a clinician’s review.

Call emergency services for throat tightness, noisy or difficult breathing, trouble swallowing, hoarseness, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or lips. Get prompt medical care if neck swelling is rapidly increasing, the skin is very painful, or fever and severe illness accompany the rash.
