Hives After a Virus: What to Know

Viral illness can be followed by urticaria: itchy welts may appear during recovery, move across the body, and fade before returning elsewhere. Fever, a new medicine, or a new food can create a similar rash, so the timing of each exposure matters. Hives are different from a rash that stays fixed in one place. Swelling of the lips, eyelids, or face may be angioedema.

Keep the skin cool with loose clothing and a cool compress. Use gentle, fragrance-free washing and avoid hot baths, overheating, alcohol-based products, and scratching. Make a timeline of the illness, medicines, foods, and the rash, including photos when it is visible. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine is safe for you. Continue prescribed treatment for the infection unless the prescriber tells you otherwise.

Get emergency help for trouble breathing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, faintness, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek prompt care for facial swelling, persistent vomiting, severe weakness, or a rash with painful skin, blisters, mouth sores, or purple spots. Arrange review if hives continue, recur after recovery, or are accompanied by ongoing fever or a child who seems unusually unwell.

Ask whether the pattern fits post-viral urticaria or a medicine reaction, whether any current medicine should change, and how long to monitor the rash. Clarify which symptoms need emergency action and whether an antihistamine is suitable.
