Hives After Sun Exposure: What to Know

Hives are raised, itchy welts that can appear and fade in different places. Sunlight may trigger a form of light-sensitive hives, while warmth, perspiration, sunscreen, fragrance, or friction from clothing can create a similar pattern. The rash may be limited to exposed areas or spread beyond them. Hives are a presentation of urticaria; facial or lip swelling can occur with angioedema and needs closer attention.

Move indoors or into shade, loosen warm clothing, and place a cool damp cloth over the itchy areas. Avoid further sunlight, hot showers, vigorous exercise, and scratching until the skin settles. Review anything newly applied before the rash began, and take a photo if the welts change quickly. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine is suitable for you. Do not restart a suspected product without medical guidance.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the tongue or throat. Seek prompt medical assessment if swelling affects the face or mouth, the rash is rapidly spreading, or vomiting accompanies the skin reaction. Arrange a dermatology review when episodes recur after light exposure, last beyond a short period, or leave bruising, pain, blisters, or skin marks.
