What should you know about hippocratic method for shoulder dislocation?

A shoulder dislocation occurs when the upper arm bone moves out of the shoulder socket. The Hippocratic method used traction with the practitioner’s foot positioned in the armpit as a counterforce. Because this can apply force close to nerves, blood vessels, and injured tissues, clinicians generally choose reduction techniques based on the direction of dislocation, examination findings, imaging, and their training.

Support the arm in the position advised by the treating team and do not try to pull the shoulder back into place. Remove rings or watches if swelling is developing, and avoid food or drink if emergency treatment may require sedation. Arrange follow-up even if the shoulder appears to have gone back in, because soft-tissue injury and instability may need assessment.

Rehabilitation usually begins with protected movement, then progresses to restoring range, rotator-cuff control, and shoulder-blade strength. Physiotherapy can guide this progression. Repeated dislocations or structural damage may lead to discussion of shoulder stabilisation surgery, depending on age, activity, imaging, and recurrence pattern.

Go to emergency care for a visibly deformed shoulder, severe pain after an injury, inability to move the arm, numbness or weakness, a pale or cold hand, or absent pulses. Do not drive yourself if the arm is severely painful or circulation and sensation have changed. A suspected dislocation needs professional assessment even when swelling is limited.

Ask which direction the shoulder dislocated, whether imaging shows a fracture, and how circulation and nerve function were checked. Ask how long to protect the arm, when physiotherapy should begin, what recurrence signs to watch for, and whether stabilisation surgery is relevant.
