What should you know about hip arthrocentesis technique?

Short answer

Hip arthrocentesis is a guided procedure that uses a needle to remove fluid from the hip joint for testing or symptom relief.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Imaging may help position the needle

What the technique involves

The skin is cleaned and numbed before a clinician guides a fine needle toward the joint, commonly with ultrasound or another imaging method. A small sample may be sent for analysis, including checks for infection or crystals associated with gout or pseudogout. Removing excess fluid can also ease pressure. The hip lies deep beneath muscle, so image guidance helps the clinician choose a safe path and confirm the needle position. The procedure is different from injecting medicine, although an injection may be discussed separately.

Preparing and recovering

Tell the treating team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, diabetes, and any current infection. Wear clothing that allows access to the hip and follow instructions about eating, drinking, or medication changes. Afterward, keep the area clean and avoid strenuous activity until you are told it is appropriate. Mild soreness can occur; use only the pain relief recommended for you. Results from fluid testing may help clarify the cause of swelling and guide the next step. When to seek care

Contact your clinician promptly if the puncture site becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or painful, or if fluid continues to drain. Seek urgent medical help for fever, chills, feeling suddenly unwell, new weakness, or severe pain after the procedure. These symptoms need assessment because infection or another complication requires timely treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask why aspiration is recommended, whether imaging guidance will be used, what the fluid test may show, when results are expected, and which activities or medicines should be paused afterward.

Questions people ask

Is hip arthrocentesis painful?

Local anaesthetic reduces sensation, but pressure or brief discomfort may occur as the needle is positioned.

Why test hip fluid?

Testing can look for infection, blood, or crystals that help explain joint inflammation.
