High fever and suspected strep infection

A strep throat infection may cause a sudden sore throat, painful swallowing, swollen neck glands, red or swollen tonsils, and sometimes white patches. Cough, runny nose, hoarseness, or eye irritation often suggest another respiratory illness instead, although symptoms can overlap. Fever with a skin rash, severe one-sided throat pain, muffled voice, drooling, or difficulty opening the mouth needs assessment because a complication may be developing. A clinician can decide whether a throat swab or other test is useful.

Rest, sip fluids, choose soft foods, and use warm or cool drinks according to comfort. Follow product directions or clinical advice for fever relief, and avoid sharing cups, utensils, or toothbrushes while contagious illness is possible. Do not use leftover antibiotics or give someone else’s prescription. If antibiotics are prescribed after assessment, take them exactly as directed and ask what to do if a dose is missed or an allergy appears.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck swelling, severe dehydration, confusion, or a bluish appearance. Arrange prompt medical review for a high fever with severe throat pain, a spreading rash, persistent vomiting, or symptoms that worsen rather than settle. Children, pregnant people, and adults with reduced immunity may need earlier assessment. A new fever after starting treatment also deserves clinical advice.

Ask whether your symptoms fit strep or another infection, whether testing is needed, which pain or fever medicines are safe for you, and when you can return to work or school. Mention antibiotic allergies, recent antibiotics, exposure to someone ill, and trouble swallowing.
