Short answer

Hiccups while drunk are commonly related to alcohol irritating the stomach, rapid drinking, swallowed air or reflux, and safety concerns matter if alertness or breathing changes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First step
Stop alcohol and sit upright
Safety
A sober person should monitor significant intoxication
Emergency concern
Difficult to wake or abnormal breathing

Why alcohol can trigger them

Alcohol can irritate the stomach and relax the muscle that normally helps keep stomach contents from moving upward. Drinking quickly, using fizzy mixers, laughing or swallowing air can add stomach pressure. These effects may stimulate the diaphragm reflex and cause repeated hiccups. A hiccup after drinking does not prove alcohol poisoning or a stomach disease.

Heartburn, sour fluid, nausea or upper-abdominal burning may point toward reflux or stomach irritation. Read about [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/) and [Gastritis](/conditions/gastritis/) for context, but do not assume hiccups identify either condition.

What to do now

Stop drinking alcohol, sit upright and take small sips of water only if you are fully awake and can swallow normally. Avoid lying alone, driving, swimming or taking sedating medicines. Have a sober person stay nearby if you are significantly intoxicated. Do not induce vomiting, give coffee as a treatment or use forceful tricks to stop hiccups.

Once fully recovered, note whether the episode followed rapid drinking, fizzy drinks, a large meal or reflux. If symptoms recur when sober, ask a clinician whether [Acid Reflux Medication](/treatments/medical-management/acid-reflux-medication/) or another approach is appropriate.

When to seek urgent care

Call emergency services for trouble waking the person, slow or irregular breathing, blue or grey lips, repeated vomiting while drowsy, seizure, collapse or severe confusion. Seek medical advice when hiccups continue after sobriety, prevent fluids or sleep, or occur with severe abdominal or chest pain. Keep the person on their side if they are vomiting or difficult to rouse while waiting for help.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether alcohol-related reflux, stomach irritation or a medicine could explain repeated episodes. Tell the clinician what was consumed, how quickly, whether vomiting or black stools occurred, and whether hiccups also happen without alcohol.

Questions people ask

Why does alcohol cause hiccups?

It can irritate the stomach, promote reflux, increase swallowed air and alter pressure around the diaphragm.

Are hiccups a sign of alcohol poisoning?

Hiccups alone do not establish poisoning, but reduced alertness, abnormal breathing, collapse or repeated vomiting require emergency help.
