Hiccups from coughing: what to know

A forceful or repeated cough can disturb the normal rhythm of the diaphragm and cause extra air to be swallowed. Hiccups may then appear during or after a coughing bout. The cough and hiccups may also share an irritant, such as a throat infection, smoke, or reflux. Acid reflux can cause cough and hiccups in some people, while gastritis may be relevant when stomach discomfort or nausea is also present. This pattern does not prove one diagnosis.

Sit upright, breathe gently through your nose if comfortable, and take small sips of water. Avoid smoke, fizzy drinks, alcohol, and rapid eating while symptoms are active. Honey may soothe a cough for some adults, but do not give honey to a child under one year. Note whether the cough is dry or produces mucus, when hiccups begin, and whether fever, wheeze, heartburn, or chest discomfort occurs.

Arrange medical advice if the cough or hiccups persist, keep returning, disturb sleep, or make eating and drinking difficult. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue lips, coughing blood, fainting, confusion, or inability to swallow fluids. A clinician can assess the lungs, throat, digestive symptoms, and medicines rather than treating the hiccups in isolation.
