Itchy HFMD rash: understanding the symptom

Itch with dryness or cracked skin may occur in eczema or after contact with an irritant. Itch in warm, damp folds can accompany intertrigo, while a ring-shaped scaly patch may suggest ringworm. Itch that is worse at night or affects household contacts deserves assessment for scabies. A new medicine can cause a drug rash. These patterns overlap, so avoid diagnosing from itch alone.

Use cool compresses, short lukewarm showers, and a plain moisturiser without fragrance. Keep nails short and press or tap rather than scratch. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change out of sweaty garments. Stop a recently added skin product until its role is clearer. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using a medicated cream, especially on the face, broken skin, or a child.

Get emergency help if itching comes with breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, dizziness, or widespread hives. Seek prompt assessment for a rapidly spreading rash, fever, facial swelling, blisters, skin peeling, eye or mouth involvement, or signs of infection such as increasing pain, warmth, pus, or red streaking. Arrange a review when sleep is disrupted, scratching breaks the skin, or the itch persists.
