What should you know about an HFMD rash all over the body?

HFMD usually has a recognisable combination of mouth sores and spots or blisters on the hands and feet, although lesions can occur elsewhere, including the nappy area. A rash across the trunk and limbs without mouth or hand-and-foot findings may have another explanation, such as Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Heat Rash, Intertrigo, Psoriasis, Ringworm, Scabies or a Drug Rash. A new medicine, recent illness, heat exposure, itch at night, scale or skin-fold involvement can change the level of concern.

Take clear photographs in good light and note when the rash began, where it started and how it moved. Use gentle cleansing, loose breathable clothing and a plain moisturiser if the skin is dry. Avoid new products and do not scratch or peel blisters. Make a complete list of medicines and supplements, but do not stop a prescribed medicine abruptly unless a clinician tells you to. Reduce close sharing of towels and clothing until an infectious cause is excluded.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the mouth or face, faintness, confusion, purple spots, skin peeling, painful widespread blisters, or sores involving the eyes or mouth. Seek same-day advice for a rapidly spreading rash, high fever, severe pain, signs of infection or a new rash after medicine. Prompt review is also appropriate when a child is not drinking, urinating less or unusually sleepy.
