What should you know about HFMD diaper rash?

Hand, foot and mouth disease may produce small red spots or blisters on the buttocks, groin or upper thighs alongside mouth sores and lesions on the hands or feet. A typical nappy rash is more often a sore, red area where urine, stool and rubbing contact the skin. Bright red rash in the folds with nearby small spots can suggest yeast, especially after antibiotics. These patterns can overlap, so the child’s mouth, hands, feet, temperature and general behaviour matter too.

Change nappies promptly, rinse with lukewarm water or use a fragrance-free cleanser, and pat rather than rub. Give short nappy-free periods when practical. Apply a simple protective barrier or Emollient Therapy recommended for the child, keeping products away from the mouth. Do not burst blisters. Wash hands after changes, use separate towels, and avoid sharing creams between children. A clinician should confirm whether an antifungal medicine is needed before starting Topical Antifungal Treatment.

Contact a clinician if the rash spreads quickly, becomes swollen or painful, develops pus or yellow crusting, or does not improve with gentle nappy care. Seek urgent help if the child is difficult to wake, has breathing trouble, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, or cannot drink because of mouth pain. Prompt assessment is sensible for a very young infant with fever or a blistering rash.
