What should you know about HFMD antibiotics?

Antibiotics act against certain bacteria, whereas hand, foot and mouth illness is caused by a virus. They will not clear the mouth ulcers, rash, or viral symptoms and can cause unwanted effects when taken unnecessarily. A clinician may consider an antibiotic only if there is a separate bacterial problem, such as an infected skin lesion, identified during an examination. Do not use leftover medicine or someone else’s prescription.

Prioritise fluids, because painful mouth sores can make drinking difficult. Cool drinks and soft foods may be more comfortable. Use age-appropriate pain relief exactly as labelled or advised by a healthcare professional. Wash hands after contact with saliva, stool, or blister fluid, and avoid sharing cups, towels, or utensils. If an antibiotic has been prescribed for another diagnosis, take it only as directed and ask before stopping or changing it.

Ask for medical advice if drinking falls, urine becomes sparse, fever persists, or the person becomes markedly tired. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, confusion, seizure, severe neck stiffness, or inability to wake normally. A clinician should review skin that becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen, painful, or oozy, since those changes may point to bacterial infection rather than uncomplicated HFMD.

Ask what diagnosis the medicine is intended to treat, whether an antibiotic is actually needed, how to manage mouth pain, and which reaction symptoms require immediate help.
