HFM rash on body: what to know

An HFM rash on the body can reflect irritation, allergy, infection, or inflammation, so its pattern and accompanying symptoms matter. Check whether it is confined to covered areas, skin folds, hands, or feet, and whether new areas appear. Itch, pain, fever, blisters, scaling, or drainage provide useful clues without proving a cause.

A rash in warm, damp folds may be worsened by moisture and friction; a ring-shaped scaly patch can suggest a fungal process; and widespread symmetrical redness after a medicine needs careful review. Eczema and psoriasis can produce recurring dry, inflamed patches. The same condition can look different across skin tones, so an in-person examination may be more informative than a photograph. Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, pat rather than rub, and apply a simple moisturiser to dry intact skin. Keep folds dry, change out of sweaty clothing, and choose loose fabrics. Avoid new cosmetics, harsh antiseptics, and unprescribed combination creams. Wash hands after touching the rash, keep nails short, and do not share towels if infection is possible. Seek emergency help for breathing trouble, facial or tongue swelling, collapse, skin peeling, purple or bruise-like spots, or severe illness. Obtain prompt medical care for a rapidly expanding rash, significant pain, fever, warmth with pus, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Contact a clinician soon when a new medicine preceded the rash or when home measures do not help.
