What should you know about HFM without a fever?

The condition may cause painful ulcers in the mouth and a rash or small blisters on the hands, feet, fingers, toes, or buttocks. Some people have only a few skin spots or mouth changes, and not everyone develops every symptom. The absence of fever does not rule the illness in or out. Similar rashes can have other causes, so the appearance, location, timing, and contact history help a clinician decide whether assessment is needed.

Give regular drinks and offer cool, soft foods if chewing or swallowing is sore. Avoid sharing utensils, cups, towels, or face cloths. Wash hands carefully after using the toilet or changing nappies, clean frequently touched surfaces, and cover coughs and sneezes. Do not pick blisters. A pharmacist can advise on age-appropriate pain relief or mouth-care options, especially for a young child.

Contact a clinician if mouth pain prevents drinking, urine becomes noticeably less frequent, the person is unusually drowsy, or symptoms are worsening rather than easing. Get urgent help for breathing problems, marked confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck, or difficulty waking. Seek advice if the rash is spreading rapidly, looks infected, involves the eyes, or does not resemble the usual hand, foot and mouth pattern.
