HFM face rash: what to know

An HFM face rash is a change in facial skin that needs context from its pattern, symptoms, and recent exposures. Redness, bumps, scaling, swelling, or small blisters can look similar even when the causes differ. Note when it began, whether it itches or burns, and whether a new product, medicine, illness, heat, or close contact came before it.

The face is frequently exposed to cosmetics, cleansers, fragrances, masks, sweat, and sunlight. Irritant or allergic reactions may affect areas touched by a product; eczema can cause dry, itchy inflammation; and infections may form a more defined or spreading pattern. A clinician may compare both sides of the face and inspect the eyes, lips, and mouth. Do not assume that a facial rash has one diagnosis from appearance alone.

Pause newly introduced skincare, makeup, fragrance, and hair products until the skin settles. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a bland moisturiser if it does not sting. Avoid scratching, picking, exfoliating, and applying steroid or antibiotic creams near the eyes unless a clinician has advised it.
