What should you know about hertz hearing test?

Hertz is the unit used for frequency, or pitch. Low-frequency sounds are deeper, while high-frequency sounds are sharper. During audiometry, you listen through headphones or inserts and respond when you hear tones. The clinician records the quietest sound you detect at each tested frequency on an audiogram. The pattern can show whether hearing loss is mainly low-pitched, high-pitched, or spread across frequencies. It does not identify one cause by itself.

Tell the tester about ear pain, recent loud-noise exposure, blocked ears, ringing, dizziness, or difficulty following speech. Sit quietly, keep the headphones positioned correctly, and respond consistently whenever you hear a tone, even when it is faint. Do not try to guess the result from one sound. Earwax buildup, temporary congestion, equipment fit, and attention can affect a session, so an unexpected pattern may need checking or repeating.

Arrange prompt assessment for sudden hearing loss, hearing loss in one ear with severe dizziness, or new hearing difficulty after a head injury. Seek urgent care if hearing change occurs with facial weakness, severe headache, or other neurological symptoms. Gradual hearing problems, persistent ringing, or recurring imbalance also deserve a clinical review rather than self-testing alone.

Ask which frequencies were affected, whether the pattern suggests a conductive or inner-ear problem, whether the test should be repeated, and whether further assessment is needed for conditions such as Meniere's disease.
